The one-page everything card

Figure brief · not yet drawn

a single taped card holding the ten rules in the upper portion of the page, with the companion index set square beneath it.

What earns a place here. Only a rule that changes an answer, that applies across at least three domains, and that you can use without recalling a number. Nothing that is merely true qualifies.

THE TEN RULES

  1. Airway, breathing, circulation, then everything else.
  2. Unstable before stable, new before chronic, unexpected before expected.
  3. Rank hypotheses by speed of harm, not by likelihood.
  4. Assess before you intervene, unless the intervention is the assessment.
  5. Delegate the task, never the assessment, the teaching, or the judgment.
  6. When an option says notify the provider, ask what you would do while you wait, and do that.
  7. Name the feeling, ask the open question, and never reassure.
  8. In a drug question, the adverse effect outranks the mechanism.
  9. Compensated is not corrected, and treated is not resolved.
  10. Answer every cell. A blank scores exactly what a wrong guess scores.

Takeaway. Ten rules and one index replace the panic of not knowing where to look.
