Item Types That Ask You to Commit Inside the Record

Strip 1 · Highlight in text Mechanic: click the words, phrases, or sentences that meet the stem's condition. Hook: plus-minus scored, so highlighting a whole paragraph to be safe is the most expensive habit on the exam. Three defensible phrases here: the new right calf tightness, the calf 3 cm larger than the left, the compression device found off overnight.
Strip 2 · Drop-down in text Mechanic: a sentence with one or more embedded menus, completed so the sentence is true. Hook: read the completed sentence aloud before moving on. It has to stand as written, not as intended.
Strip 3 · The dyad Mechanic: two linked drop-downs, a condition and its supporting evidence. Hook: rationale scored. "The client is most likely experiencing venous thromboembolism as evidenced by unilateral calf enlargement with new calf pain" scores. The same condition paired with the heart rate alone does not, because that evidence does not distinguish it.
Strip 4 · The triad Mechanic: three linked blanks, typically a condition and two pieces of evidence. Hook: both evidence blanks must point at the same condition. One good pairing plus one loose one is not a partial credit situation here.
Strip 5 · Drag-and-drop, into targets Mechanic: move responses into labeled slots. Hook: zero-one scored, so every slot gets something in it before you leave the item.
Strip 6 · Drag-and-drop, into order Mechanic: sequence the responses. Hook: build the sequence from the first action you could defend to a colleague, not from the most memorable one.
Strip 7 · The reading method Mechanic: for all three types, read the whole record once, then re-read only for the stem's exact condition. Hook: the stem's condition is the filter, and it is always narrower than "abnormal."
Watch outHighlighting generously feels thorough and scores worse than highlighting three phrases. Under plus-minus, the fourth uncertain phrase can erase the credit the first three earned.
