How CAT decides

The engine re-estimates your ability after every scored item and then serves the next item close to that estimate. Because items are targeted at you, most candidates hover around a similar felt difficulty no matter how well they are doing. Length varies because the engine stops as soon as it is statistically confident you are above or below the standard, not when a quota of questions has been met.

Length and time

• Minimum items .......... 85
• Maximum items .......... 150
• Unscored pretest items in every exam .......... 15
• Total appointment time .......... 5 hours
• Breaks .......... optional, offered after roughly 2 hours and again after roughly 3.5 hours

The three stop rules

• Confidence-interval rule. The exam ends as soon as the engine is confident your ability sits above or below the passing standard. Most exams end here.
• Maximum-length rule. If you reach the maximum item count still near the standard, the final ability estimate decides.
• Run-out-of-time rule. If time expires after the minimum has been met, the last estimate decides. If the minimum has not been met, the result is a fail.

High-yield: Several next-generation formats award partial credit, so an incomplete or partly correct answer is not automatically a zero. Answer every part.
