The shift clock and the ten-minute drill

Protect the pass
The two intervals where interruption causes the most patient harm are medication preparation and medication administration. Batch non-urgent requests and answer them together after the pass. Use the unit's do-not-interrupt signal if the unit has one, and say plainly that you will respond in a few minutes if it does not. Answer a non-urgent page after the pass rather than during it. Nothing on this list applies to a deteriorating patient, who interrupts everything.
The ten-minute drill
- Name the seven rungs of the ladder in order, and give the one-word test for each. FIG 3.4
- Sort four patients into the four quadrants and say which quadrant you visit first, second, third, and fourth. FIG 3.5
- Take one proposed delegation and run it through all five gates in order, naming the gate it fails or confirming it passes. FIG 3.7
